Kiel, Wisconsin - "This is like Christmas!"

Kieler Nachrichten, Nr. 19 –Special Report – Tuesday, 23 January 1979, p. 19 by Dietrich (Dee) Eicke & Joachim (Yogi) Reppmann

“This is my most beautiful Christmas present!” exclaimed Kiel’s mayor Arthur Kahl as he unwrapped a picture volume with an accompanying inscription by Dr. Bantzer, Mayor of Kiel, Germany. Two students from Kiel University, Yogi and Dee, visited the town of Kiel, Wisconsin (population 3,000) during their trip through the Midwest of the United States.

Charismatic Hans-Jürgen (Mackie) Meyn, Chief Editor of excellent Kiel's Daily News (Germany's "Des Moines Register") had encouraged 'Dee & Yogi' to become freelance journalists. As their 'fatherly friend,' he also had to make sure that those happy impresarios would finish their college studies. The question that confronts us today is the same as in 1931-32: Do our leaders have the capacity to reach beyond their grasp, to challenge us to seek the higher angels of nature, to choose "Be informed! Be informed!" rather than "Be afraid! Be afraid!" In the end, however, we know that world peace is too important to be left in the hands of our leaders. Peace starts in our own back yards when we speak our for understanding when their is disharmony, food security where there is hunger, health care where there is disease, education where there is illiteracy, conservation where there is environmental harm, sustainable development where there is poverty ... and when we write letters across border to build goodwill and better friendships. - William Tubbs (2019)
