Happy 90th Birthday, Dr. Wolfgang Plenio!

Exemplary Writings by Dr. Wolfgang Plenio, a retired gymnasium professor, who lives near Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In 1973, Wolfgang, who was born in 1930, was Yogi Reppmann’s Latin tutor in secondary school. Excerpts from his body of thought, drawn from the correspondence between Plenio and Reppmann over the years, are contained in this booklet. E.g. "A Journey through the Greek World of Thought"; "America (Dvořák; Heidelberg 1948)"; "On the Impossibility and the Prospect of Being a Christian Today"; "The Significance of Music in European Culture".

Plenio's classical music reviews were more than just reports describing what had been seen and heard. His extensive knowledge flowed, expanding the horizons of his readers. Many of his contributions published decades ago are still as relevant today as they were then. Wolfgang Plenio, a critic with staying power—a stroke of luck for all of us. The question that confronts us today is the same as in 1931-32: Do our leaders have the capacity to reach beyond their grasp, to challenge us to seek the higher angels of nature, to choose "Be informed! Be informed!" rather than "Be afraid! Be afraid!" In the end, however, we know that world peace is too important to be left in the hands of our leaders. Peace starts in our own back yards when we speak our for understanding when their is disharmony, food security where there is hunger, health care where there is disease, education where there is illiteracy, conservation where there is environmental harm, sustainable development where there is poverty ... and when we write letters across border to build goodwill and better friendships. - William Tubbs (2019)
